Monitoring Nitrous Oxide for the Dental Assistant (4 hours)
The use of nitrous oxide and oxygen for relative analgesia is similar to the uses for general anesthesia. It is important to understand that these are distinctly different techniques and applications. This course is designed to familiarize the student with the Dental Practice Act in Tennessee and to provide information relative to the proper role of the assistant during the administration of nitrous oxide/oxygen in the dental office. The student will learn the correct application for nitrous oxide/oxygen use in terms of philosophy and psychology in controlling anxiety and pain, the clinical differences between relative analgesia and general anesthesia, the physiology of normal respirations, the side effects of relative analgesia, and identify the four stages of anesthesia, the role of a dental assistant, equipment used to administer nitrous oxide/oxygen and safety measures.
